5 Fandom Friday :: Characters Who Totally Get Me

I’m the worst! The crazy, hectic last few weeks have put me way behind on Fandom Fridays. But the most recent one was just too good to ignore and so I bring you the 5 Fictional Characters I Relate To a little on the late side. Another reason why it was a bit delayed is that I really wanted to come up with the most sincere list. I went through all my favorite books, movies, and shows to you the best answers.

Tina Belcher

Being in Middle School is the absolute worst; your body is basically betraying you, your old friends are basically betraying you, oh, and your hormones are raging around inside you and, yes, will basically betray you. No one describes this feeling as real as Tina Belcher from Bob’s Burgers. Like Tina, I was completely boy crazy at that age. There was this strange, budding sexuality within me that was way too embarrassing to tell my friends about. All I could do was live out silly fantasies in my head. Same with all 13 year old girls, Tina wants to be popular, but would never betray her nerdy side. While preteen Erin was reading Harry Potter fanfiction, Tina was writing her own erotic friendfiction. She of course is more upfront about her awkwardness than I ever was, but nevertheless, her character is so real to me.

And I still like butts.

Cath Avery

I adored Rainbow Rowell’s novel Fangirl, one of the main reasons being that I felt so much empathy to Cath, the main character. Starting college wasn’t so easy for me. I’ve always struggled with anxiety and had a terrible relapse my first week of college… when I was all alone, in a very scary, new place. It didn’t help that I was feeling pressure from the expectation to go out and party and didn’t exactly see eye to eye with my roommate. I saw Cath go through these struggles too and rooted for her because I know I came out better for them. Although I certainly am not a twin, write fanfiction, or am dealing with a sick parent, I know what it’s like to fight a battle in your head when it’s supposed to be the best time of your life. Sometimes you just have to escape into a magical world.

It’s no secret, I’m a bit of a bibliophile. Sometimes a thrilling night to me is staying in and getting lost in a book. This was maybe once considered a little weird, but then Beauty and the Beast was released and announced “Hey! You can be both smart AND a badass!” Looking back on it, Belle was probably my first awesome fictional role model. Being a dreamer and a voracious reader at a very young age, I could see a lot of myself and her. She showed me that you can go screw those people who don’t understand you and look down on you, because you will fight to the end for those you love. And maybe if you play your cards right, you’ll get a huge library!

Bilbo Baggins

In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit, who, also like Belle, wanted so much more than this provincial life. As someone who’s lived in the same suburban town for her entire life, I can absolutely relate to need to get out and see the world. Traveling and seeing everything there is to see has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember, and acting on this dream has given me amazing opportunities. Bilbo knew deep in his heart that he couldn’t pass up his life altering quest and discovers himself in the process. But Bilbo and I both know that you should never give up the comforts of home.

Gemma Doyle

Gemma, from Libba Bray’s A Great and Terrible Beauty and its sequels, is probably the character on this list lease like me, but who I want to be friends with the most. I obviously have never lived in Imperial India, or attended a Victorian boarding school, or discovered secret powers that bring me to another realm. However, I’m drawn to Gemma’s powerful imagination, adventurous wit, and quest for knowledge. She is fiercely loyal to her friends, often to the point where it could lead her to danger. But that’s the kind of person she is; she knows that the journey isn’t meant to be done alone. I also may have a slight fictional crush on her beau, Kartik.

As always, 5 Fandom Friday is brought to you by The Nerdy Girlie and Super Space Chick. Follow them to participate!
